A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
