Delhi Rises to Dangerous Smog After Celebrations

On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of Delhi registered an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to ten times the safe limit set by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that blankets the capital as the cold season begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current local administration appealed to the supreme court to propose a easing of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Reality

Despite concerns of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Many monitoring devices throughout the city recorded contamination peaking around late evening to some of the worst readings observed during celebrations in at least three years.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also triggered a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining air quality in Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near the festival period, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst levels ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.

Multiple Pollution Factors

The problem in the capital is resulting from a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing toxic smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to numerous studies.

The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 premature mortalities per year in the city.
