Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.
The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.
Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in recent months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
