Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
