Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
