Manchester City's manager Expresses Regret Over Camera Operator Altercation Following Loss to Magpies
Pep Guardiola has admitted experiencing "embarrassment" after an exchange with a camera operator subsequent to Manchester City's loss at Newcastle this past weekend.
At full time, a visibly upset Guardiola stepped onto the field and had heated discussions with the referee, Sam Barrott and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães, and also touched the broadcast crew's equipment.
"I said sorry," Guardiola stated. "I'm humiliated, regretful, looking back. It's not acceptable. I immediately apologized to the operator. I am who I am. With a thousand matches under my belt I’m not a perfect person, I make huge mistakes."
"One thing is certain, I stand by my team and club, without a doubt. Why I want to defend my team is clear – based on my career to clinch the title we need near-perfect totals, high nineties, or we fall short."
City's Position and Manager's Take
The team sits in third and are seven behind the Gunners following their fourth loss of the season. "Four defeats in twelve matches means we must do better," he conceded. "Technically, we can still achieve all."
When questioned about a potential quadruple could be achieved, Guardiola answered: "As a seasoned reporter, did you hear my talk discuss four trophies in December when we won the quadruple? Never."
Interaction with Guimarães
Regarding his confrontation with Guimarães, the coach explained: "I've known him for many years and post-match, even at the Etihad, we converse. Our paths always cross and I always have a good relationship. I enjoy it. I'm passionate, I like discussing and gesticulate."
Guardiola would not be concerned should a rival coach addressed his squad right after the final whistle. "No - as long as it's respectful like I always have done, it's fine," he noted, mentioning the referee. "The referee was involved throughout the match, he was involved. My God, he was involved."
Controversial Decisions
The team felt aggrieved that Barrott or the VAR denied a spot-kick on a Schär tackle on Phil Foden, and doubted Bruno's positioning on Barnes' goal the decisive strike. Subsequent images show he was level.
Next Big Match
Guardiola will take charge of his 100th Champions League game versus Leverkusen this week. "That's impressive, showing we compete we have been there," he commented.
City have 10 points after four games of the league phase, while Leverkusen have five.
