Weather experts are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Go Ahead Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are due to be chilly, meaning additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travel is expected to be impacted.
• People have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Alerts Released

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
