The British tennis star secured the most important success of his career by rallying from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory marks Norrie's initial win over a reigning world No 1.

"Huge. So big for me," said Norrie, who becomes the latest UK male player in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to appreciate my performance in the second half of the year. To secure a triumph like this, it's the greatest win of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the top player and arguably the most confident athlete in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also ended Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight Masters 1000 victories, which marked the best series of performances in the Spanish star's young career.

Contest Analysis

Alcaraz seemed to be progressing easily to success at the start as he eased past the first set. Nevertheless, the British contender gradually fought his way into the match by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling exchanges. His unceasing consistency and reliability slowly took its toll.

For much of the contest, the world number one delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to get his timing right with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old looked notably uneasy hitting his forehand, which has been the best shot in the sport for a large part of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, the British player offered Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his consistency, physicality and power throughout while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to advance forward and play aggressively.
