The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has revealed the official language that will be used to reference the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The racing series is embarking on what is potentially the biggest technical shift in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of fully sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a substantially higher energy storage, driving key advancements in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, pilots will strategically manage battery power – sometimes even qualifying laps – to extract the optimal lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which phrases would make things clearer of the main elements of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to render a set of intricate features of the sport as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, initial designations for specific components – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in preference for intuitive labels that clearly indicate the actual function of the system.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that drivers will have greater control to determine tactics regarding battery management, harvesting, and saving energy.

The new regulations mandate a set of functions that will be shown on broadcast screens to enhance the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

  • Overtake Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a driver is within one second the vehicle in front to assist with an overtaking maneuver.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand power boost from the hybrid system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It provides the pilot peak output at the activation of a control.

Both of these key functions will have to be used with calculation, as the total energy is restricted.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – spreading on the long straight sections for reduced drag and higher speed, and sealing in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: Cars can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only limited engine output is applied.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The 2026 cars will be reduced in size and weight compared to the 2025 spec, with a wheelbase reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will move on the straights to reduce drag and enhance velocity and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Wheels will retain the current rim size, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The new power units will have an approximate 50-50 split in energy output by the petrol engine and the ERS, a rise from about one-fifth electric power under present rules.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly unit that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

Cars will be required to run on carbon-neutral fuel, manufactured from biomass or synthetic industrial processes.
