Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has described the circumstances as a "complete and utter mess," speaking this morning.
Speaking during a broadcast interview, he referenced comments made by the justice minister following a previous inmate discharge, stating that the minister would establish more robust checks.
"There was a delay of six days for the prison service reportedly to realize this has happened" and notify the police, Jenrick explains, "leaving them a week behind in the search to find him."
The shadow minister condemns Lammy's handling during yesterday's PMQs and alleges him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Speaking about incorrect inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "every single accidental discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He acknowledges there were such releases under the former administration, but claims the figure "has risen significantly" under Labour.
Advocating more prisons to be constructed, he continues: "What the British people want to see now are adequate safeguards implemented."
"That is a particular administrative failure by the justice department supervised by the minister," the opposition member says.
