Seconds before the announcement, a nervous worry raced through Rory McIlroy's mind. He revealed he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star this time."

"This has been a great night for golf," he stated. "Golf was celebrated in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and hopefully we can build upon that."

In this instance, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The result was clear, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to reflect on a memorable evening for both himself and the team winners, who were honored as the top squad.

Constant Motion

But rather than stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already plotting his upcoming event. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was flying right back to the sunshine state.

"It's been a frantic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of downtime over Christmas."

Hunger for More

However, McIlroy made clear he has no intention to slow down, even after achieving the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a few good years in me," he remarked.

"Additional major championships, season-long rankings, team competitions, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep progressing and have the drive, that's the most important thing."

Team Triumph

Meanwhile, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the collective trophy, also lauded golf's stellar night and his pal's individual success.

"Those are the times that will live with us for all time so to get the public's recognition for that is truly special," he commented. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he has earned it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood smiled before quipping, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Looking Ahead

His goal is to at last capture his initial major championship next year but he understands McIlroy still desires more success. "Provided that you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to work on," he noted.

Football Loyalty

As he was leaving, a last query was raised. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be convinced to do it again after his new triumphs?

"As long as they halt the flow of so many goals on their own pitch," he answered with a grin. "There is progress. There's a touch of hope around."

On the back of a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that the champion golfer is looking on the positive aspects.
