Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

By the Numbers

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.

In late December, Williams married Denmark-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
