When Beachgoers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the famous beach as her back yard. On a recent weekend night, she, like many neighbors, heard loud noises ringing out through the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the street, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone approaching behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and unshod … He’s running into something that certainly every part of you would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort racing.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews caring for numerous those hurt.

Local Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the patrol base beside the site of the incident serving as a makeshift medical station. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as entering the surf to save people who were struggling.

Following the attack, messages of appreciation circulated widely. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of beach patrol published a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful sentiments and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the compassion directed at our team,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many professional lifeguards, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the incident began until late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is remarkable,” said a council representative.

“The team demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores secure for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and process the atrocity of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
