The Journey of a Movement can be characterized by distinct phases.

1. The Grand Vision

A charismatic leader or leaders present a new and transcendent idea offering a cure for disconnected individuals.

Thus we find ourselves. Plans are in motion to confront the system down in Brisbane. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. An isolated player, vulnerable, anxious, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently as a symbol, has stumbled through the lines and is being led away with discretion to a different team in county cricket.

Do you ever miss the beginning, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of pure instinct.

2. Initial Adoration

Movement founders guarantee a reboot, hope for a future, support, success together united in belief in the method.

What was this thing at first? Players celebrating feeling good. Body art. Muscles. Jawlines. Confident masculinity. Oh sure, England’s players insist it’s not a real term, which is funny as it’s denied, what did we see?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the batsman executing a stroke so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the excitement of Ben Stokes at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to look down and see him playing on the ground shirtless holding a fish.

It’s Ben Duckett still being allowed to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a joyful figure in a waistcoat, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. Certainly, the vibe, for quite a long time, was entirely positive.

3. Expansion Period

Growth phase. Unity enforced through repetition of mantras. These beliefs can appear contradictory to prove commitment.

Am I alone? The backlash, the anger, the disappointment following the initial loss seems too strong, too much. The performance was poor on the field, as history shows. Before that happens, a couple of points to note regarding this. In the past, at the start, of light and heat, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. The team have been sealed up within this world for years. Attempting to break free, to build a better atmosphere, they are just repeating their upbringing, building another enclosure, a limited community, however with a new team and a mentor promoting authenticity provided you conform.

Stay present. Confront risks. However much you change, you’re always basically in the same place.
